Caroline A. Jones

Caroline A. Jones is the Rudge Allen Professor in the History, Theory and Criticism section of the MIT Department of Architecture, and Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives in the School of Architecture and Planning.

An art historian, curator and critic, she studies modern and contemporary art: how it is produced and distributed through technology, how it is received in the city, and how it connects to science. In fall 2025 she was a Visiting Scholar at the American Academy in Rome, studying "scientia" before science around 1600 and the Latin-using patrons of the new academies of art and science.

Her books include *Machine in the Studio* (1996), *Eyesight Alone* (2005) and *The Global Work of Art* (2016), and she has co-edited *Sensorium* (2006), *Experience* (2016) and *Symbionts* (2022) for MIT Press. With historian of science Peter Galison she is writing *Invisibilities*, a media theory for the Anthropocene.
